Climate Studies Internship

Overview

MASARY Studios seeks an individual with a passion for ecology, a strong interest in the arts, and an emerging expertise in carbon auditing to join our team for a unique internship opportunity.

Our studio is embarking on a project-specific public artwork at the scale of urban infrastructure in the Boston region. A major part of this project will be specific, targeted research, auditing and consideration of novel net-zero strategies. It is part of the artwork, and also part of what we are dedicated to do more broadly.

We are seeking a motivated Climate Studies Intern to support our carbon impact auditing efforts. The intern will focus on analyzing, measuring, and reporting carbon emissions associated with both the embedded and operational activities of this specific project. This role offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in carbon auditing, carbon trading, and net-zero implementation strategies.

This position will be a temporary, part-time 10 hours / week position with the title of Climate-Studies Intern. The intern will work with the project team, including outside experts and report to studio principal Ryan Edwards.  

Detailed information about this project will be provided to candidates at the interview stage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessments of carbon impact, including both embedded and operational emissions.

  • Assist in data collection, analysis, and reporting related to carbon footprints.

  • Support audits and evaluations of sustainability initiatives.

  • Contribute to the development of carbon offset and reduction strategies.

  • Stay up to date with relevant carbon trading markets and regulatory policies.

  • Collaborate with project partners to propose novel carbon-offset strategies

Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Climate Studies, or a related field.

  • Strong understanding of carbon capture, carbon trading, and net-zero strategies.

  • Experience with sustainability audits, carbon accounting methodologies, or lifecycle assessments is a plus.

  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools.

  • Excellent research and communication skills.

  • Passion for sustainability and climate action.

Practical Requirements

Candidate should:

  • Strong written and spoken communication skills

  • Excellent listening skills and empathy

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely

  • Have their own laptop for use at the studio and at home (all software, access, etc. will be provided).

  • Efficient time management, file organization, and communication skills

  • A basic understanding of Google G-Suite.

  • Be Boston-area based

  • Have flexibility to shift working hours to accommodate schedule changes and project needs.

Terms and Compensation

Duration: 10hrs/week for 10-12 weeks, beginning in May or June. Schedule is to be determined together during the hiring process.

Compensation: Compensation may be provided as a monthly stipend or school credit (if applicable), to be discussed during the interview process.

Schedule & Workspace: MASARY will provide a workspace and access to the studio. The candidate should provide their own laptop computer. Flexible hybrid schedule developed with the studio team.

Since its founding in 2015, MASARY Studios has expanded its practice across multimedia and interactive art, including touring, temporary, and permanent installations, events, and performances. Today, MASARY Studios is owned by co-founders and principals Ryan Edwards and Sam Okerstrom Lang. They and principal Jeremy Stewart direct the Studio employing five additional team members across a broad spectrum of backgrounds and skill sets.
